Last night’s NHL slate was a catastrophe for me, going 4-7-1 to lose 6.56 in a bunch of low scoring games. Tonight we have just a small four game slate to bounce back on before a huge 14 game slate tomorrow!
Rangers vs. Kraken (7:00)
I’d expect this to be a fun cross conference game here. I broke this down in depth with my article on StatSalt. As I said in that article, I like the Rangers to get the win here at home and will take them in regulation for a unit (wish I locked in the moneyline last night).
Blue Jackets vs. Maple Leafs (7:00)
Tonight we get the first game in a back-to-back home and home series between these teams in Columbus before they go to Toronto tomorrow night. This is a huge mismatch. The Leafs are very good this season and pretty much locked into a first round playoff series against the Lightning again as they come into tonight in second place in the Atlantic with a 31-13-8 record. They’ve had a nice nine days off after going into the All Star break with a 5-2 loss to the Bruins. Toronto’s been very good on both ends of the ice this season, especially defensively. The Blue Jackets on the other hand blow, with a 15-32-4 record on the season, and they went into the All Star break on a three game losing streak with only five wins in their last 24 games. They’ve been horrendous on both ends of the ice, one of the worst teams in the NHL on both sides. I love the Leafs to win this game. I’ll take the Leafs in regulation for 2 units along with the over for half a unit.
Blackhawks vs. Coyotes (8:30)
This matchup is horrible between two of the worst teams in the NHL. I’d lean the Blackhawks at home and the under in this matchup but not enough to even consider betting either. I’ll skip this game entirely and it’s not even worth the effort to write it up.
Ducks vs. Penguins (10:00)
This game shouldn’t be interesting but with the way these teams have played recently it actually is. The Penguins returned from the All Star break on Tuesday night with a 2-1 overtime win at home against the Avalanche to improve to 25-16-9 on the season. They only have six wins in their last 18 games but have picked up at least a point in seven of their last eight games. Pittsburgh’s been pretty good offensively but they’ve been inconsistent on the back end. The Ducks have been one of the worst teams in the NHL this season with a 17-29-6 record but they’ve shockingly going 5-1-1 in their last seven games. Statistically the Ducks have been the worst team in the NHL on both ends of the ice. The Penguins needed overtime to win the first game between these teams at home on January 16th, winning 4-3. I’d expect they get their win easier tonight. I love them to win but the moneyline is way too expensive at -278 for the way both of these teams have played. I’ll still get in on the Pens though with them in regulation for half a unit. I’d lean the over but not enough to bet it.
