Sabres vs. Flames: 2/11/23 – Game Reactions/Recap

The Sabres returned from a ten day break for the All-Star Game with a matinee cross conference matchup against the Calgary Flames at home and played a complete dud of a game, losing 7-2.

With 12:04 left in the first, Tage Thompson opened the scoring with his 35th goal of the season as he ripped a one timer from Rasmus Dahlin on the power play with a rocket of a slap shot from the circle to put the Sabres up 1-0. Casey Mittelstadt had patience and with a beautiful wrist shot made it 2-0 Sabres with 7:26 left in the first period. Despite getting outshot 11-3 in that first frame, we looked good, scoring on two of the three Sabres shots, which all came on high danger scoring chances. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was solid in goal to keep it scoreless on the other end of the ice.

Didn’t take long for the game to get tied up. Just 2:17 into the second period Jakob Pelletier got past Olofsson and on a nice pass from Kadri, made it 2-1 with the first goal of his career. Only 20 seconds later Calgary tied the game at 2 on a Mikael Backlund shot that got past UPL. The Flames took their first lead of the game, with Buffalo native Dennis Gilbert scoring 4:04 into the second. The Sabres gave up the fourth goal in a row to the Flames 7:39 into the second, as Nazem Kadri tipped in a shot top shelf past Luukkonen to make it 4-2 Calgary. Horrible period. We five shots in the period, with only one halfway through the period. We played like complete dogshit on both ends of the ice, getting beat 4-0 in that period with terrible defense and no high danger shots, making it easy for the Flames.

Calgary opened the scoring in the third with their fifth straight goal of the game, making it 5-2 just 1:57 into the period. Cash the over at least, I guess. With 6:55 left in the game, Tyler Tiffoli put the icing on the game that was already over, making it 6-2 on a great shot. The Flames with some perfect tic-tac-toe passing that made the Sabres defense look even more embarassing, Dillon Dube made it 7-2 with 2:49 left in the game.

Final: Sabres 2, Flames 7

What a complete dud of a game. We looked like absolute shit today on both ends of the ice after coming back from not having played for ten days. Total disappointment of a loss. We got off to a hot start but as soon as the second period started the whole game flipped. The Flames outshot us 40-23 and outplayed us by an expected goal rate of 3.68-3.28.

We head out west now to California and look to bounce back in LA late on Monday night.

Go Sabres.
