NHL Daily Gambling Preview – 2/20/23

The Leafs completely screwed my last night, giving me a big double loser in their 5-3 loss to the Blackhawks. With that, I ended up going 3-3 to lose 5.34 units. Today we have a six game NHL slate with some day games for President’s Day. Let’s bounce back.

Bruins vs. Senators (1:00)

This matchup typically wouldn’t be interesting at all but the Sens won the first two games between these teams, which wouldn’t be expected when you look at that they’re on opposite ends of the Atlantic Division standings. I broke this game down in depth with my article on StatSalt. As I said in that article, I expect the Bruins flip the script here and will take them in regulation for 1.5 units. I’d slightly lean the under but not enough to bet it.

Panthers vs. Ducks (1:00)

This cross conference matchup puts a mid tier team that likely misses the playoffs against one of the worst teams in the league. I’d expect this to be a fun game though, as I broke down in depth with my article on StatSalt. I expect the Panthers to win here at home but don’t think they’re worth betting on for the price. I’d lean the over too but not enough to bet on it at 7 or with the 6.5 juiced up heavily, not wanting to have to rely on the Ducks scoring. So I’m sort of combining the two with a unit on the Panthers team total over 4.

Flames vs. Flyers (4:00)

This isn’t a great matchup. The Flyers are having a terrible season, coming into today’s game on a four game losing streak to drop to 22-25-10 on the season. Defensively they haven’t been horrible but their offense is one of the worst in the NHL. The Flames have been pretty disappointing as well with a 26-19-11 record. They’re coming off a 3-2 overtime win against the Rangers on Saturday night where they had a 2-0 lead early in the first 46 seconds of the game, blew that to go to overtime but then got the win in OT. Calgary has been okay, but not spectacular on either end of the ice. Calgary won the first game between these teams 5-2 on November 21st in Philly. I’d expect they win again tonight and will take them in regulation for a unit.

Sharks vs. Kraken (4:00)

The first time these Pacific Division teams played this season was one of the most high scoring games of the year with the Kraken winning 8-5 at home on November 23rd. This is a pretty big mismatch for a divisional game. The Kraken are in third place in a very tight top of the division with a 32-18-6 record. They’ve gone 3-0-1 in their last four games, coming off a 4-2 win against the Red Wings at home on Saturday night (push on my over in that game). Seattle’s offense has been very good this season but their defense has been inconsistent. The Sharks are one of the worst teams in the NHL with a 17-29-11 record and will likely be trading one, if not both of their two best players, Erik Karlsson and Timo Meier before the deadline. San Jose has struggled on both ends of the ice this season, especially defensively. I like Seattle to win here on the road and will take them for a unit. I’ll also lay the juice on the Kraken team total over 3 for half a unit. I’d lean the over in this game, but the Sharks have stayed under in each of their last five games, letting me down in most of those games, so I’ll just stay off the total here.

Rangers vs. Jets (7:00)

What a great cross conference game this is, matching up two great teams. The Rangers are on fire with a 22-4-4 record in their last 30 games to improve to 33-14-9 on the season, sitting in third place in the Metro Division and they have picked up at least a point in each of their last ten games and all but two of their last 20 games. They had a seven game win streak come to an end on Saturday night in Calgary, losing 3-2 in overtime in a game where they gave up two goals in the first 46 seconds of the game. The Rags have played awesome hockey on both ends of the ice and their offense is on fire lately. Winnipeg’s having a good season as well, currently in second place in the Central Division with a 34-21-1 record. Last night they lost 4-2 in New Jersey, their second loss in a row. On the season, the Jets have been around league average offensively and elite defensively, backstopped by one of the best goalies in the league in Connor Hellebuyck. With Hellebuyck having started last night, they’re projected to go with backup David Rittich in goal tonight instead. In the first game between these teams, the Jets won 4-1 at home on October 14th. With the Jets in the second half of a back to back and projected to start Rittich in goal, I like the Rangers to win here at home and will take them for a unit, along with the over for half a unit.

Penguins vs. Islanders (7:00)

Tonight we have the third game of the season between these Metro Division teams that have both been disappointing lately and are tied in points. The Penguins are 27-19-9 on the season. Coming off a 5-2 loss at home to the Devils on Friday (winner for me), they’ve lost their last two games in a row. Pittsburgh’s been good offensively this season but they’ve been very inconsistent on the back end. The Islanders have been struggling too recently, finding all kinds of ways to lose. Coming off a 6-2 loss in Boston on Saturday, they’ve only picked up one win in their last five games to drop to 28-24-7 on the season. They’re one of the boringest teams in the league, with one of the lousiest offenses in the league but really solid defense, backstopped by one of the best goalies in the league in Ilya Sorokin. They’ll also be without one of their best players with Barzal getting injured. The Isles won both previous games between these teams on Long Island, with a 5-1 win on December 27th and a 5-4 win on February 17th. I’d slightly lean the Pens and the over in this game, but not enough to bet either, so I’ll just stay off this game entirely.
