NHL Daily Gambling Preview – 3/16/23

Solid night for me on the NHL yesterday, going 2-2 to win 0.93 units. Today’s all about basketball but we’ve still got a big eleven game hockey slate. Let’s win again!

Panthers vs. Canadiens (7:00)

Huge mismatch here in the Atlantic Division. The Habs have struggled with a 27-35-6 record on the season. On Tuesday night they ended a seven game losing streak with a 6-4 win in Pittsburgh (still cashed my Pens team total on that one). They’ve played quite poorly on both ends of the ice. The Panthers crashed down from winning the President’s Trophy last year and they’re on the outside of a playoff spot with a 33-27-7 record, right in the Wild Card race. They’ve played well recently with a 10-5-1 record in their last 16 games, coming off a 5-4 overtime loss to the Jets at home on Saturday. Florida’s offense has been fantastic this season once again but their defense and goaltending has really struggled. The Panthers easily won both previous games between these teams this season, winning 7-2 at home on December 29th and 6-2 on the road in Montreal on January 19th. I’d expect them to easily win again tonight. The price though at -335 is too expensive to bet. I’ll take the Panthers team total over 4 for half a unit along with the alternate over 6.5 in this game for a unit.

Rangers vs. Penguins (7:00)

This should be a fun matchup between these two Metro Division teams currently holding playoff spots in the East. The Rangers are in third place in the division with a 38-19-10 record. Coming off a 5-3 win against the Caps on Tuesday night, they’ve picked up at least a point in each of their last four games, winning three of those (the loss coming against the Pens). They’ve played very well on both ends of the ice. The Penguins hold the first Wild Card spot in the East with a 34-23-10 record. They’re coming off a 6-4 loss at home against the Habs on Tuesday night, but they’ve played well recently with a 7-2-1 record in their last ten games. Pittsburgh has been pretty good offensively this season but they’ve been inconsistent on the back end. Both previous games between these teams this season were 3-2 wins for the Pens at home, in regulation on December 20th and in overtime this past Sunday. I’d lean the Rangers win here at home and would slightly lean the under, but not enough to bet it. I’ll lay off this game completely.

Devils vs. Lightning (7:00)

These teams just played each other two days ago with the Lightning picking up a 4-1 win on Tuesday night in Jersey and they’re right back again tonight. I’d expect this Eastern Conference matchup to set up what should be a pretty fun game between these two teams that are both pretty much locked into playoff spots in their divisions. The Devils are on hot fire, coming into tonight’s game in second place in the Metro, just two points behind Carolina with a 44-17-9 record. They’ve played great recently with a 20-5-3 record in their last 28 games and they’ve played fantastic hockey on both ends of the ice. The Lightning are comfortably in a playoff spot, in third place in the Atlantic Division, pretty much locked into a first round matchup against the Leafs again. They’re a slump right now though, with just three wins in their last ten games to drop to 40-22-6 on the season. The Bolts have been fantastic offensively once again this season, but they’ve been much more inconsistent defensively than they have the last several years. I like the Devils to win at home tonight and will take them for half a unit. I’d slightly lean the under but not enough to bet it.

Senators vs. Avalanche (7:00)

Last night the Avs picked up a 2-1 shootout in Toronto to extend their win streak to three straight games, picking up wins in four of their last five games. Their offense has definitely taken a step back from when they lifted the Cup last year but their defense and goaltending have been great. After having a fantastic run, the Sens are in a bit of a slump right now. Coming off a 6-3 loss in Edmonton on Tuesday night, they’re on a three game losing streak to drop to 33-30-4 on the season. Statisticallly Ottawa hasn’t played great on either end of the ice this season. The Avalanche dominated the first game between these teams on January 14th, winning in a 7-0 blowout at home. Even in the second half of a back to back, I’d lean the Avs win here, but in the second half of a back to back on the road, I feel like this is a bit of a trap game, so I’ll just stay off it. I’d also lean the over, but not enough to bet it. So I’ll just stay off this game.

Predators vs. Blackhawks (8:00)

The Predators, despite being out of the playoff picture and being big sellers at the deadline, having been rolling recently. They’ve gone 8-3-1 in their last eleven games to improve to 34-24-7 on the season, on a three game win streak coming off a 2-1 win at home against the Red Wings on Tuesday night. Not too bad. Nashville’s really struggled offensively, but they’re really solid on the back end with Juuse Saros in goal. The Blackhawks meanwhile are one of the worst teams in the NHL with just a 23-38-6 record on the season. They’re coming off arguably the biggest upset of the seaosn, beating the Bruins 6-3 at home on Tuesday night, a big loser for me. Chicago’s been horrendous on both ends of the ice. The Predators won both previous games between these teams this season in Chicago, winning 4-2 on December 21st and 3-1 on March 4th. I like the Preds to win again here. The -265 price is a bit too expensive, but I’ll take them in regulation for half a unit. I’d lean the under but not enough to bet that either.

Jets vs. Bruins (8:00)

The Bruins are easily the best team in the NHL this season, rightfully the Cup favorites as the first team to clinch a playoff spot with a month left in the regular season, setting a record for the fastest team to 50 wins with this historical season for them. They’re 50-11-5 on the year but they’ve only won one of their last four games, coming off two huge upsets, losing 6-3 in Chicago on Tuesday night. So for as much money as I’ve won on the B’s this season, I’ve gotten big time fucked in their last two games. Boston’s got the best defense in the NHL this season and the second best offense. The Jets are having a pretty solid season, in the second Wild Card spot in the West with a 38-23-8 record. They’re in a bit of a slump right now, coming off a 5-3 loss in Carolina, they’ve only won three of their last eleven games. They’ve played really well defensively this season with one of the best goalies in the league in Connor Hellebuyck and they’re around league average offensively. In the first game between these cross conference teams this season, the B’s won 3-2 at home on December 22nd. I’d expect them to win again tonight and will take them for a unit. I’d lean the under but not enough to bet it.

Oilers vs. Stars (9:00)

This should be an awesome game between two teams in the West that are in playoff spots and set up a very fun matchup. I broke this game down in depth with my article on StatSalt. As I said in that article, I’d lean the Stars win on the road but not enough to bet them. I love the over though, which I’ll take for a unit.

Coyotes vs. Canucks (10:00)

Although neither of these teams are having good seasons, they’ve both played well recently. I broke this game down in depth with my article on StatSalt. As I said, I’d lean the Canucks extend their win streak on the road but not enough to bet the side in this game. I like the over though and will take the alternate over 6 in this game for half a unit.

Golden Knights vs. Flames (10:00)

This should be a fun game in the Pacific Division tonight. The Golden Knights lead the Western Conference with a 42-20-6 record and come into tonight’s game on a four game win streak with just one loss in their last eight games and a 13-2-2 record in their last 17 games. They’ve played pretty well on both ends of the ice this year and coming off a 5-3 win in Philly on Tuesday night. The Flames are having a very disappointing season, likely missing the playoffs with a 30-24-14 record. They’ve won three of their last five games, coming off a 4-3 overtime loss in Arizona on Tuesday night. Calgary’s defense has been decent this season but their offense has sucked. These teams split their two previous games this season, both winning at home, a 3-2 Flames win on October 18th and a 4-3 overtime win for Vegas on February 23rd. I’d expect the Knights to win again tonight and will take them for half a unit.

Kings vs. Blue Jackets (10:30)

Huge cross-conference mismatch here. The Kings are having a fantastic season, in second place in the Pacific Division with a 39-20-9 record on the year. Coming off a 5-2 win at home against the Islanders on Tuesday, they’ve picked up at least a point in each of their last seven games, with an 11-2-2 record in their last 15 games. LA’s been pretty solid offensively all season but inconsistent defensively. The Blue Jackets are one of the worst teams in the NHL this season with a 21-38-7 record. They ended a four game losing streak on Tuesday with a 6-5 overtime win in San Jose on Tuesday night. Columbus has been horrible on both ends of the ice. The Jackets pulled off an upset at home in the first game between these teams on December 11th, winning 6-5 in overtime. I’d expect LA to answer back with a win at home and will take them in regulation for half a unit along with the Kings team total over 3.5 for half a unit, and the over in the game for half a unit.

Sharks vs. Kraken (10:30)

Big mismatch to close out the night. The Sharks are one of the worst teams in the NHL, coming off a 6-5 overtime loss at home to the Blue Jackets to fall to a four game losing streak and they’re just 19-36-13 on the season with a 6-19-9 record at home. They’ve played horrible hockey on both ends of the ice. The Kraken are on a three game losing streak, coming off a 5-2 loss on Monday night against the Stars. They’ve had a great season though, holding the first Wild Card spot in the West with a 37-23-7 record. Seattle’s offense has been awesome but their defense and goaltending has been inconsistent at best. These teams split their first two games this season, with the Kraken winning 8-5 at home on November 23rd and the Sharks answering back with a 4-0 shutout shocker at home on February 20th. I like Seattle to win tonight on the road and will take them for half a unit along and their team total over 3.5 for a unit.
