I came up a goal short of hitting the over yesterday in Game 2 out West to lose 1.1 units. Tonight we have Game 3 in the East as that series shifts to Florida with the Panthers up 2-0. Let’s bounce back.
Game 3: Panthers vs. Hurricanes (8:00)
This series might be over way quicker than we expected it to be. The Carolina Hurricanes and the Florida Panthers kicked off the Eastern Conference Finals with an excellent and competitive Game 1 on Thursday night with 3-2 Panthers win on the road in quadruple overtime. Matthew Tkachuk ended the sixth-longest game in NHL history 19:47 into the fourth overtime period to give Florida a 1-0 series lead, after a controversial no-goal call very early in the first overtime on goaltender interference. The Hurricanes outshot the Panthers 65-60 and outplayed Florida by an expected goal rate of 6.5-4.41 in the loss. The game was a defensive grind with 120 saves. Game 2 on Friday night went to overtime in a low scoring matchup as well, with the same result as none other than Matthew Tkachuk scored the game winner once again, winning 2-1 just 1:51 into OT, once again on the power play from some picture perfect passing, but this time much quicker than the 4OTs it took in Game 1. If they win the cup, that Tkachuk trade might go down as one of the best trades in NHL history. It’ll be a tough decision between Bobrovsky and Tkachuk for the Conn Smythe Trophy winner if the Panthers figure out a way to win the Cup, but I’m loving my 40:1 value on Bob. The Hurricanes outshot Florida 38-26 in Game 2 and dominated play, especially early, outplaying the Panthers by an expected goal rate of 4.49-2.85, but just couldn’t figure out Bobrovsky. That win gave the Panthers a 2-0 series lead on the road heading back to Lauderdale for Game 3. I think this series is over at this point. To go on the road where Carolina’s been pretty bad in these playoffs, down 2-0 against Bobrovsky, who’s been absolutely incredible, I can’t see them winning four of their next five games. I’m considering my Canes series bet and future dead at this point. They put everything into Game 2 and still couldn’t win. I expect Florida to take a commanding 3-0 series lead at home here and will take them for a unit (I considered the puck line too with great odds at +230, but I’ll stay off it). I also like the odds on this game to go to overtime once again, which has hit in both games of this series (and all four games of this round) and I’ll take it for half a unit. I’m right back on the under in this game as well after easy cashes in both games. I’ll take the under 6 on the game for 1.5 units, the 1st period under for a unit and 2 units on Bobrovsky over 30.5 saves.
