After a good win last night where the Sabres didn’t play their best, tonight we had a big let down on the road Pittsburgh, getting shut out 4-0 by the Penguins in such a boring game.
The first period of tonight’s game was okay. You could tell the Sabres were playing a little bit slow coming off last night’s game, but they did generate some decent scoring chances. Geno Malkin scored the first goal of the game with 58.3 seconds left in the first period on a wild goal as he tossed the puck from behind the goal line off UPL’s back and into the net to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead. We got outshot 15-14 in that first period, which wasn’t bad and other than the kind of lousy goal by Geno, it was pretty evenly matched and Luukkonen made some pretty good saves.
After a mostly scoreless and in my opinion, kind of boring most of the second period, with 3:36 left in the period, the Sabres defense couldn’t catch up and Drew O’Connor beat UPL with no one to stop him on the way to giving the Pens a 2-0 lead. Each team generated 13 shots on goal, but there weren’t a whole lot of high danger chances on either end of the ice.
It didn’t take nearly as long for the scoring to open the third period and just 27 seconds in the Penguins went up 3-0 with the puck getting redirected on a power play goal that was credited to Erik Karlsson. Karlsson capped off the game with an empty netter with 1:49 left in the game to end it 4-0.
FINAL: Sabres 0, Penguins 4
What a boring, lousy game to watch. Even the Penguins in a 4-0 win made this game a snoozer to watch in the first shutout this year. The Pens outshot us 40-36, out-chanced us 22-14, and outplayed us by an expected goal rate of 4.67-2.99 but it sure didn’t feel like this game had that many scoring chances. Boring.
We face the Bruins on Tuesday night and I don’t feel great about that one, especially with the B’s losing tonight in OT in Montreal.
Go Sabres.
