Travelers Championship – Gambling Preview 2019

TPC River Highlands – Hartford, CT

Course Breakdown

6841 yd. Par 70, one of the shortest courses on tour, Pete Dye course, 8 par 4s are between 400-450yds, both par 5s are reachable, guys could club down and hit their spots where they want, lot of birdie opportunities here, doesn’t favor any particular ball flight, wide and easy fairways to hit here (~70%), trees in play if you miss the fairways, the fairways get narrower the farther from the tee you go, first cut of rough isn’t very penal but gets tougher with bigger misses, soft and receptive predominately POA greens with a mix of bentgrass, greens are smaller but easier than average to hit (~67%), slow greens have a bit of slope and not much undulation, lot of the greens are elevated, pins could be located in tough spots, greens are guarded by collection areas, water, thick rough and bunkers, water in play in about 1/3 of holes but isn’t a big factor

Tournament Notes

  • 4 of the last 9 winners got their first career win here
  • Since 2001, only 2 golfers (Phil in 2001, Spieth in 2017) won on their first time here

Pretty decent for a week following a major

Defending Champion: Bubba Watson (-17)

One and Done: Paul Casey

Alternate: Emiliano Grillo

One and Done Considerations: Casey, Grillo, Cantlay, Spieth, JT

  • JT: 9800: +1800 – 1st in SG: T2G over last 50 rounds, 4th in proximity from 125-150 yds, 17th in proximity from 150-175 yds, hits a lot of greens, great at Par 4s, worth a roll of the dice on this course at this price
  • Casey: 9500: +1200 – 2 runner up finishes here, great results here in the past, very good iron player, good short game, hits a ton of greens, plays Par 4s well, will be very chalky
  • Grillo: 7900: +4000 – 2nd in SG Approach last week, has been T10 in SG Approach in a lot of tournaments this year, hits a lot of greens, really good iron play, just has to putt well, 19th and 43rd here the last 2 years, 18/19 cuts made with 8 T25s, 3 T10s, will be high owned
  • Knox: 7700: +5000 – former winner here, playing decent lately, good T2G and approach game, hits a lot of greens, good on Par 4 scoring from 400-450 yds
