Last night the Sabres were in Tampa on the second half of a back to back looking to bounce back from losing to the Hurricanes on Friday night but they fell short again, losing 5-3 to the three time Eastern Conference champions.
The Bolts got on the board first, 12:53 in the game with a Nicholas Paul goal. We went into the first intermission tied though with Zemgus Girgensons putting it past Brian Elliot to tie it up with 3:36 left in the first.
In the second period Brayden Point broke the tie 5:05 into the period to make it 2-1 Tampa. Just 3:29 later, 8:34 into the second, the Sabres tied it up on a power play goal from Casey Mittelstadt to keep the game tied going into the third period at 2-2.
Jeff Skinner gave the Sabres their first lead of the game 4:25 into the third period but that lead didn’t last long. 3:15 later, the Lightning tied it again on a Brandon Hagel goal from Nikita Kucherov. Kuch then assisted on the game winner as well, with Nick Perbix (who I had never heard of) making it 4-3 Tampa with 4:55 left in the game. Kucherov finished off his three point night with an empty next goal with 58 seconds left to cap it off with a 5-3 Lightning win.
FINAL: Sabres 3, Lightning 5
Solid game that just crumbled at the end. The Sabres played well considering they were on the road against a very good team in Tampa and just got outshot 30-24. Buffalo had a lot of good chances and just didn’t convert. Can’t be too upset over that game.
