The Sabres desperately needed a win to end their eight game losing streak tonight and came out hot early in Montreal, scoring early and often in an awesome 7-2 win!
Hell of a start tonight for the boys as they got on the board just 35 seconds into the game with Rasmus Dahlin scoring his eighth goal of the season from the slot on a great setup from Jeff Skinner to Tage Thompson. Only 17 seconds later, JJ Peterka stuffed it in on the third effort right in front of the net to quickly make it 2-0 Buffalo less than a minute into the game. Playing in his first game as a Sabre, Tyson Jost made his presence known fighting in defense of Rasmus Asplund getting boarded. The Sabres capitalized on the power play with an Alex Tuch goal just a minute and 15 seconds later and it was already 3-0 Sabres only 2:13 into the game. Overs betters got a fourth goal quickly with Cole Caufield ripping a goal to make it 3-1 44 seconds later. I loved the start to this game but the Sabres still played a bit sloppy hockey on the back end, taking a ton of penalties with 11 penalty minutes in the first period but they luckily killed those all off and limited the Habs to just that one Caufield goal.
After such an electric first, it took until 8:39 left in the second for the first goal of the period. With some great passing and puck movement, Jeff Skinner finished with the Sabres fourth goal of the game. That cashed my big bet on the Sabres TT over 3 early. No sweat winner. The Habs made it 4-2 with 6:03 left in the period on a great follow up effort by Sean Monahan, getting the rebound of his own shot and putting the puck past Anderson.
Henri Jokiharju scored his first of the season off a perfect cross crease pass from Jeff Skinner with 16:12 left in the game. Tage Thompson couldn’t have a night where the Sabres scored in bunches and not get a goal of his own, putting one top shelf past Jake Allen to make it 6-2 Sabres with 13:21 left, set up by another great pass from Jeff Skinner, who got his fourth point of the night on that assist. As if a 6-2 win wasn’t enough, Jeff Skinner ripped home a one timer on the power play to make it 7-2 and cause Jake Allen to snap his stick on the goal post in anger to put the icing on the cake for a great win.
FINAL: Sabres 7, Canadiens 2
Phenomenal win for the Sabres tonight to get off the losing streak. They obviously played incredible offensively and the momentum from scoring so early to get up 3-0 just a couple minutes into the game drove them to keep going. I didn’t really have any complaints for the defense tonight with them giving up chances like they have their last several games on this losing streak. The penalty kill thats been horrible lately went a solid 6/6 that was a nice improvement. Solid win.
Let’s keep rolling tomorrow night against the Blues at home where we’ll be rocking the red and black for the first time since 2006.
Let’s Go Sabres!
