Got myself a winning day yesterday on the NHL, going 6-3 to win 1.1 units. I’ll take any wins I can get. Tonight we have a five game slate with some pretty fun matchups. Let’s get two winning nights in a row.
Senators vs. Red Wings (7:00)
Fun game here in the Atlantic Division between two teams that haven’t been all that great on the season, but have been decent recently. With seven wins in their last nine games, the Red Wings have improved to 28-22-8 on the season and put themselves a bit outside but definetely still in the mix for a Wild Card spot in the East. They’re coming off a 3-0 shutout loss to the Lightning on Saturday night. The Sens are 28-26-4 on the season and although they have just two wins in their last five games, they’ve gone 8-3-1 in their last 12 games. Statistically these teams match up very evenly on the season and have been below league average on both ends of the ice. These teams split their two previous games this season in Detroit, with the Senators winning 6-3 on December 17th and the Red Wings winning 4-2 on New Years Eve. I’d slightly lean Ottawa wins at home tonight but this game is a coin flip to me and I don’t see it worth betting either side of. I do like the over though, expecting both teams to score. I’ll take the alternate over 6 for half a unit.
Stars vs. Canucks (8:30)
This is not a good matchup. The Dallas Stars lead the Central Division with a 31-16-12 record on the season. In a huge game for the Western Conference on Saturday in Vegas, they got a 3-2 shootout win against the Golden Knights to gain a point for the first seed in the West. That win ended a five game losing streak for the Stars. Dallas has been fantastic on both ends of the ice this year. The Canucks are a mess of an organization and after a 3-1 loss to the Bruins at home on Saturday (easy win for me), they’re 23-31-5 on the season with just seven wins in their last 25 games. Vancouver’s offense has been pretty good but their defense and goaltending has been atrocious. I expect a pretty easy Stars win here. I’ll go with 1.5 units on the Stars in regulation along with half a unit on the Stars team total over 3.5.
Oilers vs. Bruins (8:30)
This should be a highly entertaining cross conference game. The Bruins are easily the best team in the NHL this season and after a 3-1 win in Vancouver on Saturday, they’re on a six game win streak. Boston’s one of the best offensive teams in the league and they have the best defense in the NHL. The Oilers on the other hand have the best offense in the NHL with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl leading the way in the league by a significantly margin. Recently that hasn’t translated to wins due to their very poor defense and goaltending. Edmonton’s coming off a 6-5 loss in Columbus on Saturday afternoon where they came back from a 4-0 deficit but still lost. They’ve only won two of their last seven games but have picked up at least a point in all but two of their last 18 games, coming into tonight’s game with a 32-20-8 record. I like the Bruins to win tonight on the road and will take them for a unit. I like the over even better though and will take that for 1.5 units.
Avalanche vs. Golden Knights (9:00)
I’m expecting an incredible Western Conference matchup here tonight, as I broke down in my in depth article previewing the game on StatSalt. As I said in that article, I like the Avs to get a win at home and the under, which I will take for half a unit each.
Ducks vs. Blackhawks (10:00)
This is a horrible matchup between two of the worst teams in the NHL. I broke it down in depth with my article on StatSalt. As I said in that article, I’d lean the Blackhawks and the under. No shot I’m betting either though and I’ll stay off this game entirely.
