This kid Zegras is such a fucking mutant animal

Earlier this season, Trevor Zegras of the Anaheim Ducks had the absolute highlight of the year on the most insane assist I’ve ever seen in watching hockey my whole life. He scooped up the puck like he was going to do the Michigan, tossed it over the top of the net lobbing it up in front of the goal like an alley oop for Sonny Milano to tap in out of the air. The craziest assist and pass I’ve ever seen that exemplified creativity in the sport of hockey. And he did it against my Buffalo Sabres…

Then tonight, HE DID IT AGAIN. He pulled off the coolest move in hockey that we’ve been lucky enough to see a few times now…the Michigan, the lacrosse style move where you pick up the puck and cradling it like a lax stick, put it into the top corner of the net from behind. All while keeping it below the cross bar to keep it legal.

Inspired by one of the coolest moves in all of lacrosse, the Air Gait. A move invented by one of the greatest lacrosse players of all time, Gary Gait when he was at Syracuse. A play that for decades has inspired creativity in the great game of lacrosse.

Then it was translated to the sport of hockey when in the 1996 NCAA Hockey Tournament when by Mike Legg at the University of Michigan.

Then two years ago an October 29th, 2019, Andrei Svechnikov on Carolina Hurricanes pulled it off for the first time every in an NHL game against the Calgary Flames.

Then he did it again.

Then Flip Forsberg of the Nashville Predators pulled it off last year.

And now Zegras pulled it off tonight.

Goal of the year from Zegras tonight. What an absolute beauty.

To go along with him being such a human highlight film pulling off these insane moves, this kid’s one of the obvious Calder Trophy candidates this season as the rookie of the year in a great rookie class with the likes of Lucas Raymond (DET), Moritz Seider (DET), Anton Lundell (FLA) and Tanner Jeannot (NSH). Zegras has a second most 32 points and second most 12 goals among rookies this season and tonight was his third two goal game of the season.

This kid’s got so much swagger and a personality that’s great for hockey too that you could see with his highlight reel play on the ice and off the ice on his episode of Spittin’ Chiclets earlier this season, his Sandbagger with the Chiclets crew and pretty much every interview he does off the ice. Like even in the postgame tonight he said he had a fresh tape job so he figured he’d give the Michigan a shot.

Zegras is a beauty and a half and I can’t wait to watch this kid’s career in the NHL. The league’s in such a great place.
