Sabres Playoffs vs. Canadiens – Game 2: 5/8/26 – Game Reactions/Recap

Tonight the Sabres played absolutely horrendous at home in Game 2, getting dominated by the Habs to tie up the series with a 5-1 loss.

The Habs opened the scoring just 1:36 into the game on a bad Sabres turnover in our own zone, setting up Alex Newhook to tip in a shot from Kaiden Guhle. Kind of soft, but what a bad turnover to start the play. Mike Matheson quickly made it 2-0 Montreal, 4:27 into the game on their fifth shot of the game, on a great shot top shelf from up top through traffic. This does not look good for the Sabres, playing quite sloppy to start this game with a ton of turnovers. Not a good start for us by any means. I thought we did get a little better as the period went on, but we couldn’t sustain any kind of pressure in the Habs zone, gave up a ton of turnovers and just played bad throughout on both ends of the ice. The Canadiens dominated that period, and with Josh Doan going to the box in the closing 10 seconds of the first on a dumb interference penalty to take, now their power play gets to start the second on fresh ice.

Big kill to start the second. But right after the Sabres couldn’t score on a power play themselves, the Habs went flying down the ice and somehow on a sick pass from Jake Evans over to Alex Newhook for his second tip in of the game, 4:47 into the second to make it a 3-0 game. What the fuck. We looked like shit but after a dust up with Zach Benson and Jakob Dobes, we finally scored with 37.2 seconds left in the second, with phenomenal work down low by our little rat Zach Benson, and he got rewarded for it with a tip in goal off to get us on the board. Huge goal to go into the intermission, since we looked dead for most of that period. Come back out hard in the third and try to come back.

Another turnover for the Sabres by Tage Thompson AGAIN, led to a 2 on 1, with Alexandre Carrier flying down the ice and ripping it top right corner to make it 4-1, pretty much putting this one out of reach. Let’s at least hit the fucking over here. Tage has been so bad. We’re playing so fucking awful tonight. With 4:01 left, Nick Suzuki put it in the empty net after another turnover by guess who, Tage Thompson, completely putting the game out of hand, but at least hitting the over. What an awful game.

FINAL: Sabres 1, Canadiens 5

Series tied 1-1

What an absolutely awful game. We looked like complete shit from start to finish, getting embarrassed quickly and often all night on home ice. The crowd was out of it right away after we went down 2-0 in just the first five minutes of the game. Gave away the puck on more turnovers than passes we completed. We barely got anything going in the slightest in the Habs zone. Barely any quality scoring chances. Our offense was completely dead. We took a ton of stupid penalties and the Habs dominated the entire game to tie up this series. Our best players were the worst ones on the ice tonight, especially Tage. It was just horrible. Only bright side of this game was Benson being his little carnival freak self, our little rat. But besides him, nothing.

I don’t love our chances in Game 3 as this series shifts to Montreal on Sunday night, but we have to come out with a hard effort up there and at least split these two games on the road.

Let’s Go Buffalo.
