Tonight as the series shifted to Boston for Game 3, I thought the Sabres played great to take back home ice and go up 2-1 in the series with a 3-1 win on the road.
We played better through a scoreless first period, and we actually had some good looks on the power play. The refs just slowed it down so much with some real stupid penalties getting called on us. The Sabres looked good though, so let’s keep that up and try to get the first goal tonight. We had nine scoring chances to Boston’s six, which are also some good looks and we outshot them 14-9.
Tanner Jeannot got the Bruins on the board first, using Conor Timmins as a screen to make it 1-0 Boston, 3:26 into the second, beating Lyon short side. Finally with 9:02 left in the second period, Bowen Byram found himself in the slot open and ripped it in over Swayman’s glove stick side to tie up the game on a nice look to set it up from Ostlund, the first time we have scored before the last eight minutes of the game all series. The refs haven’t helped us at all with bullshit calls and then non-calls for us, but this power play is so bad. Good period, and it’s great we tied it up, but the refs were so horrendous in that second period. Let’s win this game.
The Sabres got a nice look with Tuch getting open with a lot of ice and ripping it from the middle of the ice to give us a 2-1 lead. With 1:24 left, Noah Ostlund got his first playoff point in his first playoff game on a nice spin-o-Rama on the empty net to make it 3-1 and give us the insurance goal.
FINAL: Sabres 3, Bruins 1
Sabres lead series 2-1
HUGE win tonight for the boys on the road. We needed this win so bad tonight after how poorly we played through the first two games of this series, taking the 2-1 series lead and home ice back in the series. Big. I thought we actually played quite well tonight. Alex Lyon was in goal with UPL backing him up and played nice, sound hockey in goal and I felt like we controlled this game. So big to take it on the road. And we were playing against both the Bruins and the refs, who were fucking awful tonight. I know we still didn’t score on the power play tonight, but finally we got some good looks a man up and looked confident against the second best team on home ice this year behind the Avs. Huge win.
